Port Of Portland Dredge Oregon Refit in Vigor Drydock

The Dredge Oregon wasn’t always dredging in Oregon. The vessel was built in 1943 as a river tugboat designed for towing on the Mississippi River. In 1965, Bauer Dredging Company converted it to a dredge, and it has served the Port of Portland ever since. Although the Dredge underwent consistent maintenance over the years, its appearance was mostly the same—until 2021. “The Dredge goes in every five years for upkeep. In 2015, we replaced the main engine and diesel generators. This time, we needed to perform major structural work on the stern. We basically cut off and replaced the back third of the vessel,” said Chet Thomas, manager of special projects at the Port. The work, which took place during 2020 and 2021, actually began years before. In 2016, the Port hired naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten to analyze the remaining lifespan of the Dredge. After extensive review, Glosten reported that a majority of the steel in the stern of the boat needed to be replaced. This time lapse captures major structural work on the Dredge Oregon. Two cameras, seven different time lapse locations, and approximately 17,000 images later, the work on the Dredge was complete.

Frequently Asked Video Production Questions

  • How much does a video cost? Is there a “cost per minute” rule?
A: Every video is different and it’s very difficult to apply a general cost or rule to all cases. This is like saying “how much does a car cost?” It varies, a lot. Cost depends on your requirements, the details of your production, your timeline, how many staff we need to shoot your video correctly and efficiently. Adding scripting, actors, voice over, multiple shoot locations, animated graphics and custom music increases that cost, so every project varies. Whether your budget is a few hundred dollars, or many thousand. We do our absolute best to work within your budget, efficiently, to get you results you can be proud to show off for years to come.

    • Can we film at our office? Should we film indoors or outdoors?
A: Depending on the subject matter, we like to have a variety of shots. While outdoor shooting is fantastic when possible, we need to take into consideration weather, noise, and varying light. Factors out of our control such as the sun going behind clouds, noisy trucks driving by or people milling about also need to be considered. Indoors, these factors can be much more controlled, but still the effects of varying light, air conditioning noise and neighbors will still be a factor that needs to be taken into consideration. But if we need a more controlled environment for interviews or to build sets and create scenes then a soundstage is usually the best bet.
      • We don’t have a location to film. Can you find us a location? How much does that cost?
A: Absolutely. If you don’t have a location to film, we will work together to source the best location for filming. We work with sound stages and location scouts when we need to find something very specific. Some locations, like a home, can be secured for minimal budget. Full sound stage rentals can run $1000/day or more if you need to rent set pieces as well.
        • Can you shoot in 4K?
A: While we can master and finish content in UHD or DCI 4k, there is often no need to do so, and it just takes up more time, storage, and computing power to process. A vast majority of the content online and broadcast is 1080p HD or less. Our standard workflow is to shoot original content in 4k, and edit and deliver in high bit-rate HD. This allows for more flexibility in post, makes your videos load faster online, and looks great on all devices. We are happy to work around your individual requirements if you need higher or lower resolution delivered content, because everyone's needs are unique.

        • Can you shoot aerial footage?
A: We specialize in high quality aerial footage! We work with both drones and helicopters, and as a result are able to achieve the results needed for each specific project. We are fully insured and FAA licensed commercial operators. Check out our Drone Photography page for more examples of drone photo and video work.
          • If I want to make a change after the project is approved, will there be additional costs?
A: While we make every attempt to finish a project within time constraints and on budget, changes out of our control or prompted by additional client requests will incur additional fees.
            • Who owns the footage you shoot for me?
A: When we are hired to produce a project for our clients, our clients own full rights to all FINAL and FINISHED video projects produced by Nick Grier Photography. We retain the original RAW footage unless client chooses to purchase rights to original media as well.

              • What should I expect in terms of turnaround time?
A: Every project is different, but we typically complete projects within 1 week to 2 months. If your project is simple and straightforward, we’ll finish it closer to the 1-2 week mark. If it has a lot of graphics, custom music or voice over work. Your video may take up to several months to complete. For instance, training videos will take longer due to the potentially extended length of the final product and the sheer volume of filming required.
