Frequently Asked Aerial Photography Questions

  • Do you use radio-controlled aircraft? a.k.a. UAVs, quadcopters, drones?
A: Yes, and no. We use both UAVs and traditional helicopters to achieve whatever result is required for each individual aerial photography project. There are benefits to each, as well as detractors. Drones are highly capable. With our over ten years of experience, fully licensed and insured team, we’re able to fly in nearly any environment at nearly any location. For some projects, UAVs just don’t quite fit the bill. When we need additional altitude, subject distance, extended flight times, or to fly in highly congested environments…helicopters are the ticket. Image quality between the two is identical, they are just different tools for different jobs.

    • What if the weather is bad on the day of our shoot?
A: If the weather is bad on the day of your scheduled shoot (rain, heavy clouds, snow) you will be given the opportunity to reschedule for the next available open shoot date. If you choose to proceed with the shoot as scheduled, regardless of the weather, please understand that the listed pricing does not include fixing photos for cloudy skies. If we absolutely must shoot on a rainy or cloudy day, you would be amazed at what some advanced post production can do. Sky replacement is fairly common and can produce 100% seamless results, but keep in mind that additional processing time is extra and not included on an original quote.
      • How much does aerial photography cost?
A: A: The cost for a custom aerial photography flight primarily depends on the distance between the location to be photographed, and where we are leaving from. Helicopter flight time is billed per hour, in 0.1 hour increments at a base rate of $550/hr up to over $1000/hr depending on helicopter and camera package used.. Because of the time and effort involved in planning and pre-flighting the helicopter for flight, there is a minimum charge for one half-hour of flight time. Drones on the other hand, are flown from on location, and typically require from one half-hour to one hour for property photos, to many hours for complex projects or video productions. Drone flights are billed at 0.5 hour increments at at rate of $375/hr.

        • Can you shoot in 4K?
A: We deliver all photos in approximately 20MP files, and video content we can actually shoot in up to 6k. While we can master and finish video content in UHD or DCI 4k, there is often no need to do so, and it just takes up more time, storage, and computing power to process. A vast majority of the content online and broadcast is 1080p HD. Our standard workflow is to shoot original content in 4k, and edit and deliver in high bit-rate HD. This allows for more flexibility in post, makes your videos load faster online, and looks great on all devices. We are happy to work around your individual requirements if you need higher or lower resolution delivered content, because everyone’s needs are unique.

        • Can you shoot aerial video?
A: We specialize in high quality aerial footage! We work with both drones and helicopters, and as a result are able to achieve the results needed for each specific project. We are fully insured and FAA licensed commercial operators. Check out our Drone Photography page for more examples of drone photo and video work.
          • If I want to make a change after the project is approved, will there be additional costs?
A: While we make every attempt to finish a project within time constraints and on budget, changes out of our control or prompted by additional client requests will incur additional fees.
            • Who owns the footage you shoot for me?
A: When we are hired to produce a project for our clients, our clients own full rights to all FINAL and FINISHED video projects produced by Nick Grier Photography. We retain the original RAW footage unless client chooses to purchase rights to original media as well.

              • Can you do aerial photography in my area?
A: Absolutely. We often travel all over Oregon and Washington state, and occasionally California. Approximately 50% of our current regular clients take us to the Seattle area. We are happy to give you an estimate for travel costs while writing up an estimate for your work.
